Hedgehogs are nocturnal, which means they sleep during the day and come out at night. Most hedgehogs will also hibernate between November and March.
They either make their own nest or you can buy a purpose built hedgehog house.

Natural nesting sites

The best way to provide a nesting option for hedgehogs is by creating a natural feature, such as a compost heap, leaf pile or log pile. These have the added benefit of encouraging a natural source of food.

Purpose built hedgehog houses

Some things to bear in mind are:

  • When siting the house choose a shady, quiet area of your garden.
  • Place a source of food close by the hedgehog house (see What I Like to Eat)
  • If the box lacks a tunnel entrance, try to include an interior tunnel or dividing wall to prevent predators getting to the hedgehog with their paws.
  • Place some dust free meadow hay into the hedgehog house to encourage nest building.

“Remember – without access to your garden a hedgehog won’t use your hedgehog home, no matter how cosy it is”.

Hedgehog Houses come in many shapes and sizes and can be home made or purchased from a specialist wildlife supplies company.
